Technical University of Mombasa has established Institute of Maritime and Seafarering Studies as a full maritime academy and under the directorship of Capt Talib Ibrahim.

The institute will play crucial roles in the maritime industry for education and training that will provide specialised training programs that will equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge required for various maritime careers, including navigation, engineering, and maritime law.

Safety and Compliance with international maritime regulations is another segment that will prepare students to handle emergencies and adhere to standards that protect lives and the environment.

On research and innovation front, the institute will contribute to maritime research, advancing technologies and practices that improve efficiency and sustainability in shipping and marine operations.

For career opportunities, graduates will have access to a wide range of career paths in shipping companies, naval architecture, marine engineering, and logistics, addressing the industry’s demand for skilled professionals.

The maritime studies will foster global connectivity to better understanding of global trade and logistics, preparing students to navigate the complexities of international shipping and supply chains.

By developing a skilled workforce, the institution will support the maritime economy that is vital for many countries, thus, enhancing trade and creating job opportunities with economic impact on Kenya’s growth.

The institute will also focus on environmental stewardship through sustainable practices and environmental protection programs apart from training future leaders in the maritime sector to prioritize ecological responsibility.

Overall, the TUM’s Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies and maritime academies are essential in nurturing a knowledgeable, and skilled workforce while promoting safety, innovation, and sustainability in the maritime industry.

The origin of TUM can be traced back to the late 1940s as the first institution of higher learning to be established at the coastal region of Kenya.

The university has passed through four distinct phases to reach its current state as first as Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (1948-1966), then, Mombasa Technical Institute (1966-1972), Mombasa Polytechnic (1972-2007), Mombasa Polytechnic University College, and finally through a Legal Notice Number 160 of 2007 awarded the Charter as Technical University of Mombasa on 30th January 2013 (under the University Act 2012).

The University’s main campus is domiciled in Mombasa Island with satellite campuses in Kwale and Lamu counties.
