Mombasa and Kilifi Teams Storm Dola Super Cup Semifinals

Kilifi County football team on August 22, 2024 advanced to Dola Super Cup semi finals after drowning Kwale A 2-0 in a scintillating match played at the Mombasa Sports Club grounds.

Kilifi, under the tutelage of Ali Ibrahim, topped group A with seven points ahead of second placed Mombasa A that also qualified to the semis with six points after thrashing Taita Taveta County 4-0 during a match played at the same venue.

Battle lines have been drawn ahead of the semifinals play our on August 23, 2024 afternoon for the race of which team will grab Sh1 million as the trophy prize. 

Mombasa A who had earlier lost 0-1 against Kilifi, but redeemed themselves and bounced back to be formidable opponents in the tournament.

“We rectified our mistakes that we committed in the first match, but we are ready for the opponent we will meet in the semis because we are fully prepared,” said Hassan Mtengo, the Mombasa A captain.

“We ask for our fans to turn up in large numbers to support us. We will not let them down,” he added.

The matches played on Thursday (August 22) morning Kwale A humiliated Taita Taveta County team 2-0 in the first half through Athman Bori and Salim Mzara respectively.

In other matches Mombasa A lost 1-0 against Kilifi County team through a goal scored by Stephen Chara in the first half of the match.

Other matches of Group B were Mombasa B lashing Tana River County 3-0 while Kwale B  beat Lamu County 2-1 in matches played at Mombasa Sports Club ground.

The group stage phase of the competition ended yesterday paving way for the semifinals stage as teams set eye on the Sh1 million grand prize.

Red hot Stanley Mwaura of Taita Taveta remains top scorer with seven goals the same as Mombasa (B) striker Salmon Otieno who has also scored seven goals. Lamu’s prolific striker Bahetham Titi trails second with six goals.

Speaking at the event, Mombasa County Association chairman Goshi said at least four players have secured selection to join top flight clubs in the country leagues.

“Already four players have been identified by big clubs like Ulinzi Stars. Others are joining national super league clubs and this shows how sports have opened opportunities for a majority of talents from the Coast,” he said.

Winner of the competition will walk home with Sh1 million grand prize, the runner-up will carry Sh500,000 while third team will win Sh250,000.

Top scorer will walk away with Sh50,000 while best spectators will carry Sh100,000.
