The lack of social investment – ‘social harvesting’ – has  contributed to the unemployment in a large scale in the country.

Reports indicate that many young people have had to do jobs that are different from what they studied in colleges or universities and this challenge of unemployment continues to be an obstacle that is hindering economic growth.

The lack of jobs for the youth bulge is turning into a time bomb that requires urgent attention and addressing by the government in power.

The situation of young people studying various professions, but ending up to be vegetables and unstable in their lives is becoming a norm that spells danger in the country’s socio-economic development.

Speaking at the USAWA project workshop organized by the organization of women journalists (AMWIK) in Kilifi County, Shamsa Abubakar Fadhil, said that parents have invested in the education of their children, but they were not reaping the benefits of that investment.

According to her parents are feeling the heat of unemployed youth and wastage of their resources to educate them only to become nonproductive.

“We parents are investing in the child’s education, but we don’t get benefits! There is no “social harvesting” from our investments and this hurts.

“I educate my son until university and then he ends up being a tuk tuk driver, a taxi driver or hawking bananas in the market. It’s like education is there, but one does not get a job that he or she studied. That is a huge waste of resources,” she said.
