Mombasa Women Empowerment Network, a locally based lobby group has kick-started a campaign of swooping up mentally challenged persons in a bid to facilitate their treatment.

Speaking to the media in Mombasa on Wednesday Amina Abdalla, chairperson of the organization said the exercise is meant to extend a hand of hope to the mentally challenged.

She indicates that mentally disabled persons like any other persons are constitutionally enshrined to enjoy their rights.

“We want to assist less fortunate more so the mentally challenged so that they can live a life of dignity. We shall give them all the special attention till they recover.

Amina noted that the organization has set up a special unit that offers specialized attention after treatment.

The exercise, targeting a total of 100 people will be conducted weekly.

She noted “Mentally disability is like any other illness. We are looking forward to extend our wings to other counties in the region and beyond.”

The chair is urging the public to alert the organization on the existence of any mentally challenged person in their neighborhoods in order to receive treatment.

The exercise started at Bamburi Mwisho along the Old Malindi Road and ended up at the Makadara Grounds.

At the time of going to press the organization had swooped 5 mentally challenged persons.
